Mortal Kombat

This one is from the video game of the same name. Using characters from the game allows the creative efforts to be spent in other directions...and this is certainly the case in Mortal Kombat. With the characters of the good and bad already well defined, it comes as no surprise that they seem a bit shallow and yes...video game like. But that is expected. What is not expected is the classy scenery, the excellent fight scenes and a steller, however brief, performance by Christopher Lambert (Highlander).

The story is first placed in the real world as different champions, through different trickery, are compelled to board a ghostly vessel and travel to the island where the evil warlord of another dimension is attempting to break through into this dimension. The only hope are our hapless fighters, who wonder why they have been chosen...well except for the arrogant American (we do love our stereotype don't we) who knows why he was chosen...he is the best there is.

Several bad guys get their asses whooped, and soon it is the final battle...all too soon for my 12 year old, not soon enough for me. Oh well.

The photography is neat, and so is the location. Acutally, I liked the "making of" video better than the movie. And of course Christopher Lambert steals every scene he is in...but then he is the "good sorcerer" in all this, I guess that is to be expected.
